Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga was originated in the Yoga Korunta, and is attributed to Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya.
The Ashtanga Vinyasa series originate in a text called the Yoga Korunta, which Krishnamacharya received from his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari.
Krishnamacharya has influenced other forms of yoga. Among his students we shoud mention Indra Devi, B.K.S. Iyengar and his son T.K.V. Desikachar. Krishnamacharya was well known for tailoring his teachings to address specific concerns of the person or group he was teaching.
Vinyasa method
This style of yoga focuses on a dynamic connecting posture (vinyasa), flow between yoga postures. Vinyasa also implies the linking of the movement to the breath. The breath dictates the movement . Attention is also placed on the journey between the postures not just the postures themselves. The practice is defined by the Sun Salutacion (Surya Namaskara).
There are six series in Astanga Yoga, each of one begins with Surya namaskara.
The following products are offered in the Frames version o this website, among others.
Ashtanga, NY was originally intended as a concert film celebrating the Ashtanga style of yoga, now wildly popular in the United States and around the world. It follows the aging yoga guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois as he gives his final North American workshop in New York City in September 2001. Devotees were arriving from all over the world to partake in a rare opportunity to practice with the 86 year-old Jois. The 9/11 terrorist attacks took place in the midst of this celebration, and dramatically changed the meaning and purpose of this yoga gathering. In the difficult weeks that followed, Jois used the Ashtanga practice to help heal and fortify his diverse followers. This is no intructional video, and these are not your garden-variety contortionists. Ashtanga, NY is a real look into the intersection of ancient practice and modern life, New York-style.

Wow! I'll never bother with a yoga instructor after this gem. Richard's words perfectly instruct your progress - as if he were there in the room - to assure that you learn the primary series correctly. He must be a very experienced teacher as his analogies and what he says keep you focused on the breathing and exploring all parts of the posture(s) together. I really learned a lot from what he said, discovering more and more each time (which is good because you don't look at the screen much while you're doing it!).

Tha accompanying poster includes 11 poses of Suryanamaskar A to help the practitioner master the fundamentals of positioning and alignment used in Sun Salutation A the essential core pose in the accompanying Ashtanga DVD. Yoga Journal's Ashtanga Yoga: Beginners Practice combines breathing and standing poses, including many repetitions of two different Sun Salutations, then various standing forward bends, and side angle bends for balance, flexibility, and strength. The pace of this 67-minute practice is slow, calming, and physically challenging. Remarkably fluid and flexible instructor Nicki Doane explains clearly and in detail how to do each pose and integrate the breathing. Although called a "beginners practice," true beginners will find it challenging, and no modifications are demonstrated for the less flexible, although of course you are instructed to stay at your own level. Recommended as your second stage after mastering Yoga Journal's Ashtanga Yoga introductory series. The Hawaiian setting of this beautifully produced video is gorgeous and serene. --Joan Price
